Doug credits his artistic passion to the inspiration created by the legacy of his family. His parents, Dick and Sandra Disney, who identified and supported Doug’s artistic and athletic talents from an early age, exposed Doug and his siblings to various cultural influences as they traveled internationally. Doug, being a 4th generation San Diegan, also attributes much of his inspiration to the many family vacations spent exploring the California Coast and experiencing the lure of Hawaii. These adventures shaped his love for nature, in particular the ocean, and are represented in his body of artwork. While acquiring his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Long Beach State, Doug was also the quarterback of his college football team. His unique combination of artistic and athletic creativity is prevalent in his works of art.
Doug considers being a father his greatest accomplishment. Watching his children develop the value of self-expression through art brings him great satisfaction. Doug’s children have each chosen to pursue similar paths as their father. His daughter, Makela, is currently working on her Master’s in Education to become a teacher. While his son, Derrick, is a competitive surfer as well as an aspiring artist producing alternative media artwork.
Doug is inspired by artists such as Paul Gauguin, Edward Hopper, Ken Auster, Wade Koniakowski as well as his sister, Dee Ann Disney Jones. He has been moved by their color choices and their depictions of light and shadow. As a high school art teacher of 25 years, he finds great personal reward in the success of his students as he guides their individual journeys of self-discovery as artists. Many of his students have gone on to pursue careers in art, most notably, Kaleeka Bond.
Doug’s art reflects a dynamic energy depicting each phase of his life’s journey. He paints what he knows and his pieces personify the costal lifestyle. The essence of his artwork embodies his love of the human connection with nature. In viewing his artwork, Doug hopes that you may become inspired to see nature’s beauty in a way you may not have appreciated it before. Doug believes life is the journey, not the destination. He looks forward to what lies ahead as he follows his own path and hopes to impact others on his journey.
